The Merchant was written by ancient Roman playwright Plautus. This production was adapted by Edward Gero and was done in a vaudevillian style with songs of the 1920s added into it. The design represents a mix of vaudevillian style with classic Ancient Roman piece that are easily recognisable such as togas, laurel wreaths, and gladiator helmets.
